The next thing on my list is deodorant. It’s something we use daily, sometimes multiple times a day, which makes it worth spending time searching and swapping for an eco friendly deodorant. For years, I’ve relied on Arm & Hammer Essentials aluminum free deodorant. It’s affordable and effective, ticking all the right boxes for basic use. But deodorant is also one of those everyday items that tend to come with a lot of plastic waste. I wanted to explore an alternative that used sustainable deodorant packaging.

Now, I know that natural deodorants have a bit of a reputation for not being as effective, especially for those of us who sweat a lot—like me! So, finding something that works for my needs was key.

Before anyone jumps in to critique my reasoning, let me clarify. While research suggests there isn’t conclusive evidence that aluminum in deodorants poses serious health risks for most people (especially if you have properly functioning kidneys that can process the small amounts absorbed), I still prefer to err on the side of caution. Sweat is crucial for regulating our bodies—it’s part of what has enabled humanity to survive and thrive. Aluminum-based deodorants act as sweat blockers by plugging the sweat glands, which I’m personally not a fan of. Plus, aluminum isn’t environmentally friendly. It’s non-biodegradable and can persist in ecosystems for centuries, contributing to pollution and even harming wildlife. On top of that, aluminum found in deodorants can enter wastewater systems, potentially contaminating water supplies.

I wanted a more natural and practical solution. Unlike aluminum based deodorants, natural deodorants absorb moisture instead of blocking it, and they can neutralize odor. I’m not trying to stop sweating altogether. I just want to avoid bad odor while I do. Thus began my hunt for the best natural sustainable deodorant.

There are plenty of sustainable options available that use cardboard sticks or package deodorant as creams in jars or tubes. These alternatives significantly reduce plastic waste. I’ll admit I haven’t tried every brand out there, but several caught my eye for their good reviews and ethical priorities (ie. Meow Meow Tweet, Ethique, and Fat & The Moon). While I can’t vouch for each one’s efficacy, they’re certainly worth exploring if my choice doesn’t resonate with you.

Ultimately, I settled on AKT, this brand came recommended by a friend, which is a big bonus in terms of trust. This deodorant is aluminum-free and uses Deo-Barrier Complex™ (a proprietary blend of natural powders) as its key ingredient. It’s a sustainable deodorant that actually works. AKT is a cream deodorant that is packaged in a metal tube which is recyclable. Plus, no deodorant stains on your shirts. Since it is a cream rather than a roll-on, I’ve been applying it with my hands. If that’s not your thing, they offer an applicator tool. Your first deodorant comes with a tool called “the assistant” to help you squeeze out every last bit of product. I appreciate AKT’s commitment to reducing waste. Plus, the scents are delightful, naturally derived from essential oils. All in all, it’s my next step toward a more eco-conscious daily routine.
